I know most backcountry ski partners tend to come up with little names to describe objects or things they do. I’ve heard all kinds of terms for referencing the different heel positions of the remarkable Dynafit binding. While some come from the cycling world…like free-wheel and granny gear…I like to correlate the positions with the gears on a four-wheel drive vehicle…Two-High being the lowest position and Four-Low for when you’re grinding up steeper terrain. Got any of your own Dynafit or backcountry euphemisms?
(Bonus: Jake-Braking…when you ski downhill with your skins on. )
Gaper-vators: From when Televators were the only heel lift option. At the top of a run if you forgot to drop your lifters…then proceeded to Gape and not know why, until you stop to re-skin and see said lifter in the lifted position. Generally only practised by noobs, semi-noobs and chronically chroniced heads.
bc euphemisms:
smoker = snowmobile (plagarized from the Costner flim, W.W.)
idiot-proof = conditions so consistant and skiable that even a tele-skier could do it (also known as Cave-man conditions).
alta powder = in the bc, totaly tracked-out powder, either by smokers, heli-skiers or overuse by bc skiers (ie. anything within 2-3 miles of the LCC highway)
farmington powder = in the bc, off the beaten path where your lone tracks remain unscathed until covered by the next storm (name taken from one of many wasatch areas that escape the masses, although requires an arobic down payment).
mine-field = dog-fece studded, first quarter mile of most any trail head.
Those are great. I love it!
Thanks for commenting!!!
I’ve always called the Touring modes as:
First, Second, and Third Base
and Downhill modes as:
Home Base or Plate
Goymertrac – An uphill track utilizing existing terrain to produce a quick, consistent and utterly painless kick turnless uphill. A Goymertrac generally does not necessitate the use of high heel lifters.
Interesting. What does the term relate to…or come from?
Nice link to Teton Tony. Classic!
Remember that guy you bumped into on top of Jackson Peak recently? Nice uptrack, eh?
Oh and-
TGR – Tony’s Gettin’ Rad
NOW I see.
Thanks for visiting Yep!
