I climbed the Koven Route on Mount Owen earlier in the week…here are some pics. The skies were blue, but it was pretty chilly once we were in the alpine and we wore our puffy jackets all day. It had been years since I have climbed the Koven to the summit and some ice in the chimneys and verglass on the slabs kept things interesting. (Link to skiing Koven Couloir video.)
Nice photo’s Steve! Brings back nice memories – but where’s the running water in the chimeny? All ice? Last time I did it (August ’04) we were drenched from snowmelt running off the top chockstone in the chimney (just below the snowfields, eaka-sidewalk). Owen is a nice departure from the crowds on the Grand – didn’t see anyone on the mountian all day, although we could hear voices from the NF of the Grand.
Anyway, great website. Your ski videos are great – I like the narration describing location and features. Keep it up.
Thanks OMR! The last time I did the Koven…I remember it being a bit drier in the chimney and not as icy. We did see anyone either…but I wouldn’t expect to at the end of September.
Awesome pics per usual. Man, stuff like this makes me want to pack it up and move to Jackson (insert: “Stay Away, its sucks here” comments). I mean, the Sierra is great, but it must be amazing to have this outside your front door.
