It’s not what you think. I’m not about the drop the bomb and tell you I’ve been moonlighting and freeing my heal and telemarking when no one’s looking. And noooo, I’m not…well, nevermind. Now that we have that out of the way, I admit that for the past couple years, I have……been eating McDonald’s hash browns and bacon, egg and cheese biscuits on my my way to go skiing. I figure this is a pretty big deal and I have been hiding the fact that I have been eating fast food by burying the evidence deep in the trash bag of my van or the trash can in the garage. In a day and age of vegan, vegetarian and gluten free limiting diets, not to mention the coolio “to see” and “be seen” scenes that go on at Pearl Street Bagels, I figure this is equal to dissing the northern bike path section and the whiners that think it’s too close to the road. (So sorry, but I had to go there, but feel free to bring it on.)
Anyway, back to McyD’s. For one thing, it’s super convenient and located about a quarter mile from my pad, and on the street I drive on to go skiing…not to mention the drive-thru aspect, which is over the top. Price-wise, it’s a pretty good deal as well and fits in nicely with my “work-less, play-more” ski-bum lifestyle. For only $3.59, I get a deliciously deep fried glob of something that appears to be a hash brown and a moderately warm biscuit filled with synthetically processed eggs, fake bacon and cheese that looks like it could give nuclear waste a run for it’s money.
Lots of sodium and cholesterol to get you going!
All-and-all, the nutrition information for the McDonald’s biscuit and hash brown aren’t really too bad…considering the horrors that are implied in the movie “Super-Size Me“. Yeah, they’ve got lots of sodium and cholesterol, but I don’t add salt to any of the meals I eat and my blood pumps through my veins so fast that it probably scours them clean of any cholesterol that might clog them up. (At least I hope so.) So, in general, I don’t think I’m going to die by eating this stuff, and I feel like as long as I can eat the biscuit and hash brown when they are warm, I’m safe. Because the food pretty much turns into something else entirely when it gets cold.
YEAH! That’s what I’m talking about Rando. People don’t know what they’re missing out on. A little McDonald’s every now and then is DELICIOUS.
YEAH! +1 ! i m wit you under the golden arches!
🙂
I hate to defend…………………………….McDonald’s, but they do use real eggs. In the grand scheme of things, breakfast there isn’t horrible, particularly if you’re on your way to the skintrack.
Yeah, but do you want to be carrying around the extra weight
of the defibrillator on your ascents? (when you are older)
(But wait, by that time they will probably be incorporated
into an iphone)
Hmmm, at least with telemarking, cool grrls will talk to you about it.
;^)
Ahhhh, memories. This exact combo was/is my hurried-choice of pre snow-day adventure ever since I was able to drive myself to the mountain many moons ago….I’m glad you outed your self, thereby setting a good example for others to come clean with their past and near future as well!
Good on ya, dont listen or care what the full on granola crowd thinks.
…god i hate to imagine the “scene” at this bagel place in Jackson. Do people wear their puffy jackets and beanies starting in August?
Glad that’s off your chest Steve, and on your gut! Hope you are well. Give a shout in the next couple weeks and we’ll catch up.
That’s why you’re so slow.
Just mcribbing…
glad i’m not alone. i can sleep much better now.
Wash it down with a 32 oz. Ma Dew and you’re set for the day. Kinda like a guy I see periodically who smokes unfilterd Camels while skinning, yet no one can keep up. What’s in those cigs anyway?
ha…omr. are you referring to beau…in cooke city? dude has been around.
btw…i think some call those 50/50’s. guess what the other 50 is.
I think the defibrulator should be part of the avy beacon.
Also, what does not eating at Rotten Ronnie’s have to do with granola? Isn’t it just a question of quality? Anybody could do better at home for cheaper…well if they know how to boil and fry potatoes and eggs. Add up (I’m giving generous costs) a dozen eggs ($3), 4lbs of potatoes($5), a bag of biscuits or english muffins or whatever($3), a chunk of real cheese ($5) and some decent cooking oil ($3) = $19 and you have 6 bigger breakfasts cheaper than 6x$3.59=$21.54.
Man Steve, you’re living the high life for a ski-bum, eatin out and payin people to make your food for you like that!
I find it fascinating how people in general can be more concerned with their gear… automotive products, only the finest skin glue, the fastest wax and the most effective do-everything watch etc. … than their own bodies and food sources.
I too like a sausage McMuffin and hashbrowns on the way skiing.
David’s “mcribbing” was very funny …. laughed out loud.
delete that nasty cheese and hashbrown, throw some good oj/drink of choice in a (bpa free for the suspicious folk) nalgene and it’s not horrible. It’s a hard addiction to beat though, I admire ptor for always having the time to cook bacon, eggs, biscuits etc before heading out. They have the whole grocer beat as far as breakfast sandwiches (real nasty… fake eggs, except for the organic ones, which are completely saturated in grease, even more so than mcd’s) but that was also a year and a half ago. It would be nice if whole grocer had some big tasty organic muffins, I’d probably pick that over mcd’s for <$3.
ptor,
thanks for the economic savvy breakdown but you forgot to account for labor costs. for example I make 8 dollars/hr if i spend a half hour making a mcdonalds-replicated breakfast there is four dollars of labor added to your costs. Ill choose mcdonalds to give me the grease to prevent shivering and keep me energized.
Classic!
I am not really a coffee drinker, but they were offering free coffee for the month of November at the Golden arches up here in Canada….So of course because it is free I had to take up there offer….Next thing I know, I am asking if I can have fries with that!
Way to come clean on the American dream. Everything in moderation, including moderation itself.
I think omr might have been reefering…sorry…I mean referring to Bob Athey, and those are definitely not 50/50’s, but tobacco puros.
You might check into the bacon, egg and cheese McGriddle if you begin to feel a little too light on the slopes. It is very tasty, and has the potential to deliver a days worth of calories in one small package.
steve your among friends. a #4 with a coke sets me right before skiing everytime!
Backcountry Provisions is way better, plus you can get your lunch there too and they support the local ski community.
Did they get a fucking toaster at pearl street yet? I’d rather go to jackDonalds if it means I can eat a hot breakfast.
I like the…………….mc dee but it’s not on my way to the mountains. Good on ya steve for coming clean. I don’t know how much time the wizard (bob) is up in that area smoking on the skin track but you guys should check out his web site wowasatch.com
Ptor must wake up at 4 to make his breakfast. I’m against it all, just a cup of coffee and a couple guinness maybe a left over piece of pizza is all I need.
ptor…i hear you on the $$$ front. i kills me to pay outrageous prices for food…since that means i have to work more…and most time when you eat out the mark up is outrageous. but, it’s only a couple days a week that i’ll hit mcyd’s…and it’s under $4 and uber convenient and fast…which is probably the biggest draw in my book.
chris3k…negative. you will eat cold bagels…AND LIKE IT!!! 😈
jasonb…i’ve heard those mcgriddles have like a cup of sugar in them. i like sugar and all…but my cafe-rando has enough for the morning kick in the butt.
i’m a big fan of the sausage, egg and cheese biscuit meal. $ to calories (fuel) ratio is pretty high.
Steve, you should work on a sponsorship deal! You could be the face of the golden arches! “not to mention the coolio “to see” and “be seen” scenes that go on at Pearl Street Bagels”- classic work here!
yes, yes and more yes. I’ve actually been going Ptors route for some time now. You can make it even cheaper by not shelling out for cooking oil, thats what bacon grease is for!(not kidding at all). Bacon with a cheese omlette and some cream to drink(in a pinch i have found most coffee shops will give me a free cup of cream) has been the staple. The best part is I don’t bonk or get hungry out touring. Cholesterol is a nutrient, same with saturated fat, these are good things!
blah…..I gave up Mcgnarolds at age 10 and plan to keep things that way.
mt… I don’t agree, if it’s before work it doesn’t count as labour cost. To me, making food is on the same level as brushing my teeth and wiping my ass, there’s no labour substitute. Besides if your potatoes are boiled the night before, it takes 15 minutes to fry em up in the morning, and can be pretty well ready when the coffee’s ready.
And it can still be taken to go. It’s just an efficiency in life, just like habits on the skin track than make changeovers and everything else quicker and more efficient.
I personally would rather spend the time and energy to grow and cook my own food than to work at something else to buy the food. I grew a good whack of potatoes this summer, easiest thing there is to grow. Pearl Street, the Pony Espresso, Oso negro, Rotten Ronnies, I don’t care, they’re all full of zombies of one genre or another and I’d rather eat at home with my family.
and remember kids, for full body and mind performance on the slopes E=mc2 (energy equals marijuana x coffee squared)
Interesting topic for this set of people. I’m guessing all these responding to this thread don’t fit the profile of typical American McD’s customer. I don’t go but have in the past. I typically don’t equate McD’s with health or even energy but had one experience that was telling. Called guide Scott Davis from hotel on Rogers Pass and he said pick me up in revelstoke for a heli assist day. Ate some sort of glop oatmeal in the hotel and after picking up Scott, was directed to the local golden arches where we took our place in line at the drive-thru. Seemed like no one was watching in Canada so I signed up for 3 sausage egg biscuits. Fast-forward 10 hours and 11k up and 12k down and nachos/beer finished a perfect day.
I think uber active people might be able to get away with it but it’s a big might. It’s good energy for the day but what about the long-term consequences health-wise? Not to mention the vote with your dollars aspect of it. Not all grease is created equal. I’m not aware of any science about how athletes blood is processed different than anyone else.
Another interesting aspect of this thread is Pearl St. keeps coming up. Good example of food that’s good for athletes and not for others. High gluten flour = energy if you’re active, the glucose sugar bomb = fat, if you’re not. Also, free day-olds on bench at 5pm toast up well.
As far as cost of good food goes, living on a farm this past year gave me good perspective on this. The amount of work and energy required to produce GOOD food is astounding. That’s why the subsidized mega food producing conglomerations cheat by using chemicals. The results of this speak for themselves (obesity, disease). Won’t be taking my daughter to McD’s anytime soon.
So I’m with Ptor whose theory on both food and shushing relativity hits the mark.
good stuff woodbury…and some valid points.
ptor,
the joy of culinary arts is an important factor. I too make a lot of my food from scratch. however, i tend to go one 4-5 day skiing or climbing binges and when in that state cooking is not important, neither is money, thats when i opt for convenience. typically i do go for the quality experience of cooking though.
by the way at the mcdonalds in bozeman you can, for a nominal fee, have an employee brush you teeth and wipe your ass for you.
more snow on the way!
totally mt. i enjoy and cook a good meal every night. but skiing and cafe-randos are priority in the morning.
What’s your beef with pathways anyway? Ever talk to Tim Young about your concerns? Are you against his fight to keep the pass parking lot open too? Rather than being a tough guy and asking them to "bring it", why don’t you share your views so they can respond. I really don’t think the staff of FOP is going to "bring it" and march into Skinny Skis and cause a scene for calling them whiners. However, maybe they can respond to your concerns if you share them.
That’s it, I’m moving to Montana soon. I’m tired of wiping my own ass and I want to raise me up a crop of dental floss to pay for it.
What about a D.O.G. burrito?
3 words for everyone. The Ultimate Meal
BNK is on it. that stuff rocks!!! Wish I could get it in France.
paths…no, i’m not against keeping the pass parking lot open. (and if you think wydot isn’t going to plow the lot…you are crazy.) BUT, i don’t think the pathways needs to be in the middle of the sage brush and ruining the beautiful open space that we have here in jackson hole. if the road wasn’t there…the path wouldn’t be there. a person can be hit by a car whether the path is 10′ or 30′ from the road regardless. that section of path is about transportation…not recreation. it’s kinda like the town-as-heart concept…and trying to keep sprawl to a minimum.
and if you want to criticize skinny skis for the merchandising…feel fee, but it has nothing to do with pathways, besides being a supporter of FOP.
mike b…those are good. but i usually only get them on my way to targhee. i can’t eat one fast enough if i get one in wilson on the way to the pass…and i’m too impatient to wait for one in the town location if i’m headed to the park.
Ptor, contact Joe Vallone He is leaving for France in the next couple weeks. Perhaps he would be nice enough to bring a couple cans for you.
Thanks BNK I will.
He’ll need a can himself to dig his car out!! 😉
wow! 1.1 g Na+/biscuit! that is plenty of sodium…I like to eat breaky at shades when I visit jackson for their killer burritos and coffee. may the snow fall far and wide in the northern rockies this year.
Ptor
when at the bozeman mcdonlads, be sure to catch the free bus to bridger…departs at 8:10 on the weekends.
“I’ll have a big McSacajaweya with extra pow to go please…and don’t forget any klingons while you’re back there. I’m wearing my new hamburgler stripped merinos and they have to last the week.”
ty…now THAT is convenient!
I caught the bus to bridger this morning. the driver told me to “run” if i wanted to get coffee and make it back to the bus in time! Does skinning to the bozone mcdonalds count as earning your turns?
-16 eggs in bowl, throw away 8 yolks, keep the rest. Use local eggs.
-Chop up every vegie you can find, including a potato.
-oil 16×9 pan.
-pour vegies in pan, pour eggs/yolks over vegies.
-layer with sliced turkey, ham, or meat of your choice.
-Layer with cheese of your choice.
-Bake in oven at 300-325 degrees for an hour.
-Remove from oven, let cool, divide it into four pieces
-Wrap each piece in tinfoil, but in fridge for later use.
-Reheat in microwave in 5 minutes, add salsa.
550 calories, 46g of good protein, 36g carbs. If you are eating pre-ski tour, add another boiled potato for another 35g of carbs.
Four days of breakfast made in 15 minutes. Better than McD’s, healthy, (cholesterol and eggs are NOT bad for you), better taste, non-toxic food. And when you see the heap of food this makes on your plate, with the nutritional value, you will get off your lazy bachelor ass (joking) and cook your own food, then blog about it.
Compare to Sausage McAssMuffin with cheese and Hashbrown from McAssfood.
600 calories-22g protein-45g carbs. Great meal for starving your muscles of protein with a high calorie, modest low carb, low protein breakfast. Worthless, expensive, disgusting.
People who think it takes time to eat healthy, home cooked, tasty food just need to dial in the efficiency, like a quick changeover from skinning to skiing. It’s simple.
Here’s a super rad photo TR of the egg gnarnia I cook every four days.
http://fritzrips.com/v-web/bulletin/bb/viewtopic.php?t=783
Derek that sounds awesome but why throw away the yolks?
I prefer more protein and a few less calories. Works for me.
I could never eat that before skiing and expect it to stay down…But after the run down that looks like it would be great!
4 eggs plus the whites of 2 eggs on a daily basis just doesn’t do it for me. Way too much cholesterol on a daily basis. What do those eggs taste like on the 4th day? I see that you also use turkey deli meat. What preservatives are in that? All in all I can’t see where your casserole is any better than the McDonald’s stuff.
Sue2rx,
-2 eggs, 2 egg whites. The idea that the cholesterol in eggs is bad is a myth. Read the Framingham study and countless other studies. There has been no association between modest egg consumption and cardiac related fatality. The excess carbs in the standard American diet do more to contribute to poor lipid profiles from your liver converting excess sugars to triglycerides. My lipid profile after eating this breakfast for the last year is better than when I was eating shredded wheat for breakfast. Higher HDL, same LDL, much lower triglycerides. I’m also leaner and more fit in every aspect.
-Yes, this batch has processed deli meat. Often times I use unprocessed meat from left overs from the night before. Nobody is perfect. But at least, for the most part, I know what’s in my food vs McD’s, which is food from 1,000 different cows shitting where the eat, chickens rammed in a coop shitting on themselves eating corn and gaining weight faster than their bones will support.
-The eggs taste the same on day 4 as they do on day 1.
-No better than McDonalds? Really? Tons of vegies, not deep fried, no extra oil used, good eggs form REAL free range chickens (think-better Omega 3:6 ratio than your standard store bought, corn fed chickens with multi-drug resistan salmonella).
If nothing else, it’s affordable, tastes good (in my opinion), and takes no more time than idling your car through the drive through every morning with the rest of America.
