Don’t you hate it when you hike into the Wind River Range to camp for a couple nights and climb a 8-11 pitch route, and then realize when you are at the base of the climb the next morning, that you left all the slings back at camp? Doh!!! Well, at least the views were nice and I was in good company, but those darn mosquitoes are still a bit of a nuisance at certain elevations.
Just love that area but hate the mosquitoes. About what time of year do they start dieing off? Middle of Sept?
tri…they are starting to die off already, but it seemed like they were particularly bad still in the morning and evening above ~10k’. my guess is that there is an inversion happening at night and the cold air down low is killing the bugs below ~10k’. september is a great time in the winds…if it’s not snowing. 🙂
man i hate that. once hiked into behive basin without the sling bag, luckily there is an easy route you can solo. just light enough not to notice. hey steve are the visors 15-20? let me know and all send some cash.
Bummer brah…what were you guys hopin to climb?
Joseph- must be something with Beehive…we hiked all the way in there once without the rope. Turned out to be a nice day to take the climbing gear for a walk.
nface of mitchell.
Nice Steve.
Dick Dumais and I had the exact same experience on the north face of Mitchell in the 80’s. Got to the base and oops, no slings. We saw some bail slings on the route so we headed up anyway, collecting ratty slings as we climbed. By the time we summitted we had more than enough slings, although it was hard to tell the original colors. Good thing no one fell!
wow tim…what a coincidence!!! i will have to mention it to dumais next time i see him. looks like a fun climb and i look forward to going for it again.
First time I ever went to do Irenes we unpacked the sacks and found wew had 2 ropes and no rack. Still not sure who was supposed to have the rack.
