Damn!… you will be missed.
RIP Steve and Chris
Thanks for sharing your adventures and love for the mountains.
Rest in Peace, Steve. Two souls that will be sorely missed by those up in MT.
Leaving this on an internet forum seems about as empty as putting a note in a bottle and tossing it in the ocean.
Thank you for the inspiration and all the positive attitude. You always made me laugh and think and I am going to miss everything you brought to our sport.
Rest in peace, Steve.
Hard to believe this. Thank you for sharing your awesome photos and adventures in the BC. You will be missed.
Godspeed… My condolences to your Family’s, Your Loved Ones, and your Friends. The fabric of JH just got ripped a new hole. Thanks for all the pics and beta. It was good to see you live life with enthusiasm ~ A fine example great enough for anyone to follow ~ You fought the Good Fight and went down doing what you loved the most. That is all a person can really ask for.
Rest in peace man, you were always and will always be an inspiration to me. This is a shock and i still can’t believe it i wish it were not true. Thoughts, Prayers, and Love.
Steve, you were a hero to me, and inspired me to leave the resort and explore the backcountry. Your videos, photos, advice and humor all came from the heart and we could tell you truly wanted to share the love. Thank you for everything. You will be missed my friend.
Collin

R.I.P. Steve and Chris
Live to ski, Steve (and Chris).
We’re going to miss you!
Brian and Penny
Steve: You rekindled my spirit for skiing and inspired me into the AT world…RIP and prayers for your friends and family.
Such a sad day. RIP Steve.
Steve-
I met you in the winter of 99-00, when the ropes were dropped for the first time at Jackson. I was a bumbling gaper, but you encouraged me to keep skiing. You inspired me to pursue a life in the mountains. I left Jackson and found my way, and was psyched when I got back in touch with you a few years ago. Your passion for the ski continued to inspire me, and I can’t tell you how shell-shocked I am to hear that you and Chris are lost to us.
Good luck – we’ve got eyes on you. See you at the end of the run.
Chris
Rest in peace. You will be missed. You have served as an inspiration and I am so thankful to have been able to be a part of your world.
RIP guys. Thoughts & prayers from CO.
I am so sad to hear this news. I checked out this site everyday, even in the summer. Goes to show that the mountains don’t care how good you are.
I don’t know what to say other than best wishes for the family and S.O.
RIP and condolences to family anf friends. Your motivation and enthusiasm will be missed.
God bless you both. Our thoughts and prayers go out to both of your families. Live to Ski.
Lost a hero of the ski community today, so sad, RIP
I never met Steve and I don’t live in the area but I’ve checked his website practically everyday in the winter for the past several years. The adventures, good humor, and positive skiing vibrations have inspired me (and countless others) beyond description. R.I.P Steve and Chris. Thanks for being such great ambassadors for the sport. May the families take solace in the fact that their lives were lived to the fullest and that so many people across the world were inspired by them. Live to ski!
RIP.
Thank you for your inspiration.
Steve –
You were the man. I visited this site daily in my otherwise mostly office-filled life, living through your adventures. You provided countless laughs, awesome pictures and inspirational words.
Chris – never met you, but a friend of Steve’s has to be a great guy.
Vibes to you both. RIP. LIVE TO SKI!
Thanks for all the stoke over the years Steve. You were always an invaluable source of information and inspiration. So sad to hear about this. RIP Steve and Chris.
Here’s to Steve in the hopes that he is now shredding unearthly steep and long couloirs in blower pow with other masters who left us prematurely. Rest in Peace.
I loved your passion for the backcountry. Rest well, friend.
One of my proudest days was the day I kept up with you on the skin track! Steve, you were a hero. I feel lucky to have witnessed your stoke for the mountains first hand. Your enthusiasm was contagious and inspiring. You truly Lived To Ski.
I’ll play some PJ tonight. Thanks for years of inspiration.
I wish this wasn’t true. Rest in Peace Steve and Chris. I have always appreciated Steve’s enthusiasm for anything skiing–he always put his heart in it and shared it with everyone.
RIP my friend, I’m pouring out a martini in your honor Stevo. You were a great man, and a great inspiration. You will be sorely missed.
damn.
steve, thanks for dreaming big and letting me look in on that life. this blog has been such a great connection to jackson and a passion for skiing.
you will be missed. rest in peace.
Love and positive energy to your family Steve…you will be missed alot.
Thank you for living your life the way others can only dream of. Mad props for channeling your spirit so that others could dream, hope, and be inspired. LIVE TO SKI!!!
Many thanks also to whomever started this new post so that we can pay our tributes to Steve.
I never met Steve but have lived vicariously through this blog checking it nearly every day from cubicle land for the last few years. His trip reports contained a love for skiing and the Tetons that was infectious. My condolences to his family and friends for such a terrible loss he will truly be missed by so many around the world.
RIP my friends.
I was very fortunate to have the pleasure of sharing many days up in the mountains with you. Your motto, “LIVE TO SKI” inspired me to dig deep on the toughest days as we pushed up into the highest mountains and your enthusiasm was contagious. You are an inspiration to me and will live on in all of my future endeavors! My heart goes out to all family and friends. You lived life!
Never met Steve. But came to this site regularly. This just rips my heart out. Good vibes sent to family and friends.
RIP
My condolences to family, friends, and those who knew you, I’m sure their loss will be great..and for those of us who knew you only thru your blog, it will mean a small whole in our lives for quite a time..Live to ski!
I read this blog everyday, and because of your inspiration My husband and I have started moving slowly into the backcountry. Goodspeed Steve and Chris. Prayers to your families and friends.
Steve, I read your blog everyday & you inspired me to buy AT skis and do what little skimo we have here out east. RIP and peace to your friends and family.
RIP Steve & Chris – my thoughts and prayers go out to both of your families. Having just moved here to Jackson with my wife recently, I came to Steve looking for advice on backcountry safety. I literaly was just talking to Steve just days ago about beacons, probes, shovels, etc. I get a shiver up my spine when I picture him talking to me about the importance of a good beacon and re-enacting how one would use the device in the event of an avalanche. I was impressed with his knowledge and bought the exact model he had. My God – the fragility of life and the need to become proficient in backcountry saftey techniques just got very real for me.
Rest easy friend – Thank you for introducing me to the Tetons and the awesome nickname. Laps on Dawn Patrol for Rando Steve, Live to Ski!
Rest In Peace Brothers. Thoughts and prayers to your family and friends…
Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww…………..
Steve skied in places I could not have even climbed to the top of, with passion and energy and a willingness to share his many accomplishments with us mortals. So many times he made my day and taught me things with his blog. Another JH hero down. But he had 5 lifetimes of fun and adventure. RIP.
Peace to Steve and Chris’s family and loved ones. RIP Steve and Chris. Your energy charged up the rest of us. You will be missed.
I am very, very sad. The last few seasons I always loved coming to Steve’s site, and enjoyed his enthusiasm and stoke for the backcountry life. I am really going to miss his generous and positive energy.
Sincere condolences to his friends and family.
RIP.
such a tragic loss….
RIP.
Loved your solid work!
Right now, I am struggling to process this. Days spent with Steve were always amazing. I know Steve and Chris would want us to never forget those amazing moments in the mountains and keep riding. For me, I always want to remember Steve on those amazing trips, laughter, and love of the mountains. I am going to miss him tremendously. He was the most solid partner I have ever ridden with. Thank you Steve. “Live to Ski.”

May the families of Steve and Chris take solace in knowing that these fine young men were an inspiration to all that love the backcountry…and life. Godspeed.
What we have once enjoyed we can never lose.
All that we love deeply becomes a part of us.
To live in the hearts we leave behind is not to die.
I will always be inspired by the life of Steve Romeo.
Two longtime friends who be missed.
Thanks for everything, including the tele jabs!
Terribly sad for Steve, Chris, and their families. Like many, I benefited greatly from the website and all of Steve’s thoughtful advice to the community.
Like many others here, I never met Steve. But his energy, humor, and love for the mountains was vividly captured and passed to all of us through the computer screen and it has been inspirational. He will be missed. My sincere thoughts and prayers to the family and friends of both Steve and Chris.
I will really miss Steve Romeo. Big bummer to hear of this.
[…] backcountry ski community today was shocked by the crushing news out of Jackson that Steve Romero, RandoSteve of TetonAT.com, died in an avalanche alongside his friend Chris Onufer. A terrible tragedy. They died in a large […]
long time reader, first time poster… sincere condolences to friends and family. unbelievable. so many days i read the posts and dreamed of being there. seemed like a nice, good person who inspired so many people. rip.
Hear that sucking sound? That’s the vacuum created by Steve and Chris’ passing. Steve was my first Teton ski partner and we charged every time out thanks to his boundless enthusiasm. I loved his style. Hard to believe he’s gone.
Can’t believe this?! Thanks for your advice, help and everything you did. All of us outside the big mountains lived through you. I went to your site daily. Felt like a punch in the gut when I saw this. RIP to both. Such sad news. Friends and families stay strong… not sure if there’s ever a way but keep the world posted on how we can help.
RIP Steve. Loved your style. So sad you had to leave us early. Thoughts and prayers go out to both families in this difficult time.
live to ski, somehow these words to live by, have lost a lot of meaning today.Steve brought teton skiing to a whole new level. His stoke and enthusiasm unmatched, all this wrapped up in a great guy, condolences to Steve and chris’s families
Even though I live 6 hours away from the tetons, this site was a daily check. I think Steve would have appreciated that after 20 years of tele I turned to the dynafit side a couple years ago. Guess I just couldn’t take his animated videos any longer. RIP
So much passion. Live To Ski.
Thanks for all the spiration throughout the years! You will be missed Steve Romeo RIP
RIP…long time friend and admirer. Ski adventures and advice. River trips. You will be sorely missed. Hard to believe we just talked at Snow King at the Skinny Skis film. you were such a hero to many.
Wow….hard to process this news. Both you guys have meant a lot to me through the years though you probably didn’t know it. Steve your blog has been inspiring and entertaining all at the same time and it’s been great to bump into you from time to time after our days at the Village ended. Onufer I just saw you on the tram dock! Always will remember the time long ago when I whacked my thumb going into the Couloir off the 3:45 car and you helped me put it back in place and make it down without puking. My eyes are tearing up…gotta go. RIP
I was on here often. Loved your site, passion for the mountains and willingness to share. You loved what you did and lived life to the full. RIP.
I am so glad to have met and skied with Steve, and a crushed to hear the news about he and Chris. I know Steve and Chris will be missed tremendously in Jackson and beyond. I still can’t believe my ski hero is gone. Condolences to friends and family.
Condolences to the friends and family of Steve and Chris…RIP it up, up There.
Why am I so broken up for two guys, one of which I only met once for 5 minutes, and the other I never met. But they were both good friends of many good friends of mine. Steve just got AFTER it, that dude was so inspirational to me, and was just a driven to ski bad ass. If I can do 10% of what he did in a winter, with the rest of my life, I’ll be stoked.
I am so, so sorry for these guys friends and families. In this world, where there is so much pain, and so many bad people, we have to lose two guys who gave us so much stoke, so much passion, so many good times, and so much to look up to. I don’t even know what to say, I’m just so, so sorry.
Life just isn’t fair sometimes….
I only met Steve a couple of times, but I read this blog daily and I loved it. Thanks for sharing everything!
howl at the moon people, just howl at the moon.
I don’t think I have ever seen someone more stoked to play in the mountains…and always inspiring others to do the same. Always talking about what adventures you had up your sleeve, and asking “you getting out there?!”. Here’s to endless powder turns, clear skies, and a martini at the end of the day. Rip Romeo and Chris.
My heart to the families, truly tragic and shattering news to our small community. You will be missed.
So sad. Lost a pillar of the ski community today. He loved life to the fullest. He was an inspiration to me. LIVE TO SKI!!
So sorry to hear this news. I chatted with Steve a few times, super nice guy. My condolences to his friends and family. After so many years of regularly reading TetonAT it’s gonna be strange to not have it part of my regular routine. He and Chris will be missed.
I read this site every day…the mellowest of Steve’s lines were on my meager tick list. I just heard a Pearl Jam song and I am not sure I will hear another without thinking of Steve. Wow…a hole in our small community.
Sad, sad news. Thanks for all of the inspiration.
Thanks for being cool and chearing the brother and I on at the Rando Worlds in Swiss…. You knew we were just two brothers from Britsh Columbia who had a great passion for being out there and having fun….. Thanks for bridging the gap! RIP!
Thanks for everything Steve, I’m gonna miss you!
Thanks for being so friendly when we first met. Treated me like a peer and not just a stoked grom which I was . The Tetons will always be there as a memorial.
You went big, bruthaman. Thanks for sharing and living it. I’ll miss visiting you online…
I am very, very sad tonight. A huge blow to the community, you are missed by many. Live to ski…
been wrestling with this news all afternoon/evening… seems so surreal. truly an inspiration to the jackson (and internet) community.
Steve, thanks for always saying hi…you inspired me to run hard, I remember you passing me like I was standing still on Hagen Highway. Sorry I couldn’t get to know you better,
Tom
Steve, I read your website daily… and you sold me my first pair of AT boots…. I cannot beleive this happened… you inspired me.
No Words Can Describe…
Steve lived it. He was and is my hero. Soooooo stoked on life! Thank you for the endless stoke.
Another long-time visitor here who will miss Steve even though I never met him. Thanks for all the stories. My thoughts are with his and Chris’s family and friends.
you were more of an inspiration than you could have ever known. a legend of these mountains for sure. the motivation and awe you brought to me and the community will not soon be forgoten. only hoping your untracked runs up there are endless.
The saddest news I’ve heard in a long time. Missing a man I climbed with, harassed at Moosely Seconds, chased in rando races, cheered on and harangued for spellcheck at his blog and read regularly for stoke. How lucky for me to have met him. How lucky for anyone coming after that he left a huge trove of trip reports, photos, gear tips and reviews on TAT. My sympathy for all who are impacted by Chris’ and his passing. RIP Randosteve.
Wish it wasn’t true man….. A samurai’s death. A warrior in battle.
You were a true fucking badass. And to us wannabees you gave. Rest In Peace.
Sorry to hear it Randosteve. I’ve been reading this blog daily for a long time. You lived the dream!
Although I didn’t know Steve personally, I felt as if I knew him through his website. I appreciate someone who dedicates themselves so wholeheartedly to a pursuit. Steve will be missed and his absence is weighing heavy.
Thank you for sharing Steve, that takes courage.
mtn bro, miss you bud.
I can’t tell you how many times I have been to this site. Always loved your posts, perspective and creative writing. Your pictures and videos inspired me and still do. Praying now for Chris and your family and friends. I believe in heaven and I believe we live our passions there. I hope you are enjoying a new beauty and discovering new lines for eternity.
Waking up this morning this really sunk in. I only met Steve a few times, but he was always kind and full of stoke. While his loss is felt now it will really be felt later this spring, when I am jonesing for Winds trip report. Or early next winter when I am itching for anything snow related. He will be missed every day when I sit down at work turn on my computer, wishing I could click on TETONAT. He allowed so many to get their skiing fix for the day from behind a computer. He made every day better by sharing his knowledge and adventures. He will leave a void in my life and everyone he touched. He definitely lived life to it fullest and did thing 99% of use reading only wish we could do. He was one of a kind and his ability to share his life was as well. Ski in Peace Steve and thanks for taking time to share your adventures with me.
I don’t know Steve. I am a snowboarder from Salt Lake, don’t even ski. But I love the backcountry, the Tetons and what Steve was all about. I would check this website almost daily to see what’s going on in the Teton’s and snow world. I feel like I know the guy cause he shared with us regulary. This sucks. I feel so bad for the whole community. Seriously the world lost some stoke today.
Still cant digest this one. Why must the good guys go? Steve, you were the heart and soul — and certainly the voice — of Teton BC skiing. It’s like losing our local Dalai Lama — an enlightened soul for sure. And Chris — you were the rock, the iron man — how could this happen? And now who will keep the tram running? I think I will personally name one of the cars Chris. So that for the next 40 years you can keep going to the top. RIP.
for not knowing these fellow ski brothers this one hit me hard, Steve’s blog has pushed, inspired and invited me into new terrain and paradigms in my own ski world. This blog was big part of my transition and ski devlopment into steeper bigger terrian. I feel like a lost a friend and, and comrade who educated me and didn’t even know it, one of my mt teachers. i skied a line for you today. thanks for all the inspiration. lee
Although Steve and I only spoke a handful of times his kindness and willingness to share stoke/beta as well as the ever present invite to go ski won’t be forgotten. Hard to stomach the loss for the ski community let alone for the families of both Steve and Chris. Doesn’t seem real….RIP.
Chris, was great hangin’ on Denali and getting to know you better in the last few years. Will miss you and your strong spirt.
Steve, You’re an animal, you’ve done so much. Will miss you in the mountains, but know both your spirts’ will be there when we visit.
We won’t forget you guys.
Steve, you were an inspiration to us all, LIVE TO SKI everyone!!!
Thanks for living it, dedicating a fantastic life to skiing, and for the constant inspiration and stoke. Until the next time, LIVE TO SKI!
always a smile and happy to give beta on a line — steve, we’ll miss you for years to come.
chris–thanks for keeping the tram running and ensuring that so many skiers (myself included) had some of the best days of our lives.
Onufer’s Tram Car. Fuck yeah. That one needs to get some traction. What a cool way to honor the man.
