When I got home from dinner last night, I was going to write a bit about the demo day at Outdoor Retailer…until I heard the bad news. During a film shoot for Warren Miller, extreme freeride skier and Black Diamond sponsored athlete Billy Poole, died in an accident yesterday while jumping some cliffs in Wolverine Cirque in Big Cottonwood Canyon. A huge loss to the freeride community and the Black Diamond family. He will be missed dearly.
I didn’t know Billy that well, but I did meet him at the BD Athlete Summit I attended last month. He was a very friendly young man and inspired many of us with his passion and skills in the sport of skiing. Billy was part of a new breed of skiers, pushing the limits of the sport in the big mountain environment and had a large influence on many of the new Black Diamond skis and boot designs. Billy had a big future ahead of him and many new projects in the pipeline including been involved with a new clothing and film production company.
Rest in peace Billy. I’m sure all the landings are soft in heaven.
damnit that makes me really sad. billy was one of the young cats that stayed in the place i was in at las lenas a few years ago. upon first impression, i thought he was just another broh brah with large cojones. after we hung out alittle, i realized he was alot more than that and just a really cool guy, albeit one with large cojones. i dont know what more to say except, rest in peace, billy.
Thanks for the words Bissell. Billy was one of those guys that the more you got to know him…the more you liked him.
I think there is a memoria at the Goldminer from 4-6 on Thursday.
It is so bitter sweet to see Billy go like this. Billy and I dated for about three years about four years ago. Skiing was our life, his life, it meant more to him in the whole wide world. He worked for his runs, some of the bloggers out there have no idea what effort it took to go back country, and Billy would rather hike all day to ride the cleanest freshest line. If there was deep pow-pow you know he was there. He sacrificed so much to be the pro skier, to be in warren millers film. I just hope he can watch himself over and over in heaven while they play probably one of the most important moments in his bright career. You will be deeply missed, and I will carry on all the things you have taught me, rest in peace Billy, I hope your still shred-in the nar!
Thank you so much for sharing during this tough time. I wish I had know him better.
Steve
Oh Billy! What the FUCK! you are the reason we moved to Colorado, did I ever tell you that? And it was just a little while ago you stood with me and we laughed about how good our lives were going. I am glad you left happy. You looked so great the last time I saw you buddy. You are my hero!
I never thought I would ever have to say be careful…not that that would have changed things. You always seemed so in control from the days of huckin’ over roads in the back of sunlight with a six pack and riding around to deliver Dominoes with ya to State Bridge and Vail. Thank you Billy for showing me Colorado and how lovely a man can be. You are truly a loved and lovely soul. You take care.
I will forever miss your smiling face and your awesome laugh! Go Billy Poole- you fucking rock!
BILLY KEEP R.I.P.PING
MAY ALL YOUR DAYS BE FILLED WITH POWDER,
J.T.
Still thinking about you brah…all the time
