It kills me really, because I’m usually not one to try an adventure like this unless the weather looks primo, since but I guess I was blinded by enthusiasm today. But like they say, “you don’t know if you don’t go”. On the upside, I’m hope and able to take advantage of the beautiful mountains here at home this weekend. C’est la vie! -Steve
Headed out the door right now to try to ski the Northeast Couloir on this peak. Giving it tw daoys and since it’s a multi-hour drive in both directions, and a 10 mile approach…it should be a pretty whirlwind adventure!
I’ve been able to find out very little information about this line, but it catches the eye of any ski mountaineer that views it from a distance. Rumor has it the entrance is protected by a cornice, and since it would be rad to drop in from the top (as opposed to booting up the couloir and starting the descent just below the cornice), could cause some problems. I’m not really sure is it has even ever been skied/snowboarded or not, but if successful, it would be hard to claim a first descent since there are so many people out there that roll “under the radar “with this kind of stuff. Especially in the range where this peak is located.
Anyway, that’s not why I am attempting this line in the first place, so whatever. I’ve been infatuated with it for a couple years now, since seeing a picture of it on the web. In fact, I think it was mislabeled as a different peak where I saw it, which I think many people mistake it for. I feel like I’ve done all the research I can on it, the stars are in alignment and it’s time to give it a go.
Have great weekend and ciao for now!
Going for what?
Ohhh, I bet I know… Cloud Peak, Bighorn Mtns.
I’d love to join you Steve, but I’m in Cali trying my hand at surfing right now.
Good Luck.
Matt L.
From the map it looks like it should be pretty dope…you should do your TR as a name that peak / couloir….might be kinda entertaining…
good luck
good luck! hope you get it
The NE couloir on Bighorn Peak has been skied…have a blast though! Great country!
Steve,
treat it like a first descent and get pumped! good luck, too.
Thanks for all the stoke and well wishes y’all! But sometimes things just don’t work out as planned. I guess if life was so predictable that everything was a guaranty, it wouldn’t be as exciting. Right?
always doing something rad. here’s a good pic. http://www.earth.edu.waseda.ac.jp/photogeology/200504rocky/BigornMtS/1K_DSC_1624.jpg
sends shivers down my spine. next time!
I’ve been checking some webcams since bailing on this adventure and it looks like we probably made the right call.
Monday was a great sunny day. Too bad your attempt wasn’t for that day. The weather now has returned to typical spring showers.
too bad it’s a 6-6.5 hour drive from jackson.
