I’m thinking the snow on The King will last at least another month.
I have to tell you…I’m loving these lazy days of spring. Its pretty slow in the shop, which makes late day laps on Snow King all the more enjoyable. I don’t even need to bring extra clothes as my MK’s seem to work just fine. We still have an above average snowpack and with only two weeks left until the park road reopens, things are looking really good for skiing well into June. Some people get burned out on the skiing thing as the temps begin to rise…but not me.
Though it always hurts when the alarm clock goes off in the wee morning hours before these spring tours, once I’m on the road and downing a hot cup of java, things couldn’t be better. I’ve almost smoked a few elk and deer on the way north though, which adds to the spice of the adventure. I love the easy traveling on the firm spring snow in the morning and the pow-corn combos you can sometimes get when mixing north facing slopes up high, with the sun baked south sides down low, couldn’t be better. Timing is everything though. I also love being done in the early afternoon and having the rest of the day to just chill, go for a bike ride, run errands (yeah right) or just work on replacing all the carbs I burned on the tour.
Some just have to leave town this time of year…but I’d rather stick around and enjoy the skiing and the quiet atmosphere Jackson has to offer in the off-season. Some people say I have a one track mind. But if the track leads to having fun and skiing…who can complain?
Spring time is the best/safest time for skiing also here in Slovakia (eastern Europe). However, as from 15 Apr, the mountains are closed for skiing (to protect environment). Which is bad, because we have to break the rules and sometimes pay the fine (approx 100 USD) if we are caught within the banned area. It is worth the fun though 🙂
steve,
word to that. im pumped to come up and ski the park. my buddy adam that u met in europe is up there this week. i am going to give it some more time, but ill be up there for some skiing. ill let u know when im coming up and maybe we can do some off piste skiing. by the way we hung out around the mt blanc massif for three weeks after the race. we got to ski so much cool shit. see u in the future.
Huh…that’s interesting Matus…but good for the wildlife. Some areas in GTNP are protected (no human travel), but very minimal compared to the overall size of the park.
Right on Todd. Sounds like Mt Blanc was the place to be. See you when you come up!
Couldn’t agree with you more, Steve. Here’s to an epic spring season!
Skied with the wife and dogs on the mountain here in steamboat today. Short sleeve shirt and a Teton AT visor worked nicely in the 60 degree weather. We are finally getting the corn.
Yeah mate, you do have a one track mind! But like you say, it’s not a bad thing!
hear, hear! I always look at the resorts closing as the seventh inning stretch rather than the bottom of the ninth. Snowed tonight here in the Wasatch with another couple storms on the way for the weekend and into next week. Late April/early May have been some of my deepest and most enjoyable powder days.
Deep bases, easy access resorts and peak baggin’ – gotta love spring. I’ll be headed up your way soon enough for a go at the Skillet. Will touch base to drop you some new flavors when I head up there.
Look forward to it Kendall.
Thanks!
