Well, I’m glad I didn’t buy into the big BPA scare that happened a few months ago, because last week Reuters put out an article from Milan regarding the European Union’s most recent study finding that the amount of the chemical BPA (bisphenol A) found in plastic bottles cannot harm human heath. The EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) study states that unlike rats, which were used in some earlier tests, the human body actually metabolites and eliminates BPA after exposure…causing no harm.
I can’t help but smirk to myself after seeing hoards of people replacing their plastic water bottles with metal ones at over $20 a pop. I also have to wonder what Nalgene thinks about this, seeing how they pulled all their product, retooled plastic recipe and no doubt, probably suffered the most from this whole BPA scare.
Anyway, did you read the latest AP article about cell phones and cancer??? Better not get rid of that land-line yet!!!!!
how many nalgene bottles were discarded thanks to this media hoax? And how many are now already floating in the Pacific Ocean? AND how many thousands upon thousands of years will it take for those bottles to decompose? As outdoor enthusiasts we should be ashamed of ourselves for such stupidity and for scaring the planet in such a way.

Sounds like plastics industry propoganda to me, Steve! Have you read many of the studies on BPA (the independent ones NOT funded by the plastics industry)? I have, and the news is not good. Check out the following:
Researchers Fred vom Saal and Wade Welshons, at the University of Missouri-Columbia, reviewed 130 studies (119 funded by government and 11 funded by the plastics industry) involving low doses of bisphenol A, and 40 published studies involving higher doses.
109 (84%) of the government studies reported adverse effects, and the 11 industry funded studies found negligible effects.

Ya I took about a half second to consider the BPA thing then I relized I have been using my same bottle for 11 years and i FEEL great. What a joke.

Have you seen the studies that show that skiing can cause ACL and meniscus damage? Or how about driving on icy roads during a blizzard over a high mountain pass can be fatal. Ever forget to put on sunscreen Terry? Heavens to Betsy…what are we going to do????
Really though, it’s not like I’m sucking on a piece of plastic 24/7…and the argument isn’t whether BPA harms us, but more if enough of it actually leaches out of containers and stays in the body long enough to hurt us. Right?

Kind of a no-brainer as far as I’m concerned, Steve. Stop using stuff with BPA in it…..or use it if you want to try prove its harmless. Are you sponsored by Nalgene? They don’t even make bottles with BPA in them now.
Hi there. There’s 2 problems.
1) Most of the plastic water bottles we drink go into landfills; 8 out of 10 plastic water bottles become landfill waste. Millions of bottles a day go into the trash where they take 700 years before they begin to decompose! Plastic pollution is a worldwide problem folks.
2) I’m not buying the whole "a little bpa is ok for me" argument that alot of companies are trying to sell. How many times have you taken a drink from your plastic bottle after it’s been out in the sun for awhile and it just doesn’t taste right. Let’s be honest, the plastic taste is there in the water! If you’ve got kids, you worry about that.
Anyway, we decided to try and do our own little part for (1) and (2) by chucking (recycling) all of our plastic bottles and replacing them with pure stainless steel. There’s alot of them out there, but we looked around and liked the ones from a company called "FOF Bottles". Their website has some great info on plastic pollution and BPA as well.
We all need to do our part to clean up this mess !
