Okay let’s see…1989…the year I graduated high school. Skiing-wise, I was still an intermediate, trying my darnedest to keep my legs glued together when I skied, sipping peach-tree schnapps while night skiing at Ski Sundown and getting worked trying to master my mogul skills on runs like Outer Limits at Killington. By 1989, I had been out west to ski with my dad a time or two (thanks pop!), but honestly, I didn’t know anything about Jackson Hole and the Teton Range. It’s weird how something so removed from my life back then…has become such a big part of it now.
Anyway, I found this classic footage of some skiers totally eating it in the mud/slush blend at Ski Martock (in Nova Scotia, CA) in 1989. This movie gets funnier the longer you watch it...trust me! What were you doing in 1989?
1989… you are dating yourself Steve. I was in 2nd grade and thought everyone skied on the weekends in upstate NY. I was probably still reeling from our ski trip to Maine the year before and was content skiing 600ft McCauley Mountain when we couldn’t make the 3 hour trek to Whiteface. Killington wouldn’t be for another 5 years, but I remember Outer Limits Well! The gate at the end almost took my dad’s leg off. It was also my trip out west (Telluride) in 9th grade that brought me to the Rockies. Crazy.
I skipped grades 1-5. 😳
That’s awesome! That was my home ski hill, where I grew up and learned to ski. I was there somewhere watching (I was about 12). It was the event to watch every spring. I did it one year, didn’t have enough speed, and sunk about 8ft before the end of the pond. It’s every bit as cold as it looks.
Too funny. It’s crazy how small the world seems sometimes.
I learned to ski in 1989…graduated HS in 92…..late bloomer I guess. Anyways…I was feeling pretty good in my black, hot pink and hot green Columbia jacket after just having learned to ski my first “intermediate” run at Snowbowl in Northern Arizona….I may have even had a mullet if I that deleted part of my memory still works.
mullet? like the dude that looses his pants at around 1:45?
nah…that’s the Adam Sandler -“Wedding Singer” mullet…mine was more stringy like the guy in hot orange beech pants at 4:05
Man, SkiSundown?! Connecticut I assume. I night skied there twice a week in middle and high school. Graduated high school in 1986. Crossed paths? Passed the bottle on the lift? Maybe? Mullet? Absolutely. I also did the couple hour drove to break my legs on Outer Limits. You guys brought back some good memories.
I to went out west with my dad during high school (Steamboat) and was hooked. Then went to school in Chapel Hill, NC but took every Spring Break from ’87 – ’90 to Jackson Hole. 49er Inn was the Deal! Drinking age was 18 in WY and experienced some new beer in a clear bottle with a lime in ’87. It would be years before Corona came East. Saw many a slush bowl-like event while there. Got many old pictures of them and Mangy Moose to prove it. Great post. Thanks everyone for bringing back great memories…..
