Teton Skiers: Choose Your Line Wisely

Good news Teton skiers! It looks like spring might finally be moving in to the Jackson Hole region next week. (Maybe?) I know it has been a snowy winter and most folks are chomping at the bit to get into the high peaks and hit that line they have been thinking about all season. And […]

Chased By The Sun

It seems like Norway and the island of Svalbard are the hot new spots for destination wilderness ski mountaineering right now. As a land with 24-hours of sun, located above the arctic circle, with glaciers, fjords, beaches and steep lines and peaks that few have ever seen…who could ask for more?! I tried to make […]

The Double Rainbow Video Of Skiing?

I know many of you have seen the Double Rainbow Video (if you haven’t seen it, you really are missing out and need to spend 3:30 minutes checking it out), destined to be an internet classic and now with over 26 million views, but is there a skiing equivalent?  Well, we may have found the […]

Hello Operator, I'm Stuck in a Treewell.

I’m not sure what to think about this one. Lord knows that getting stuck upside-down in a tree well with your skis or snowboard on and NOT being unable to get them off, would really be a bad situation. I’m wondering how easy (or hard) it would be to get out of a Dynafit binding, […]

Before and After

Randosteve dropping in on a burned area in the northern Tetons. Click photos for larger images. With all the new snow over the past week here in Jackson and sunny skies over the past few days, it’s been temping to try to ski some bigger lines. But, it seems like there are still some pesky […]

D5 Albright Slide?

So, last week I went on a ski tour to ski Son of Apocalypse Couloir on Prospector’s Mountain. Someone had skied it the day before (meaning we had sloppy seconds – something I hate), but they dropped in not quite from the top, so my partner and I were still able to get some untracked […]

Windy Peak 10,696

Over the weekend, I skied Peak 10,696 in Grand Teton National Park with Randokitty. The weather was pretty burly, with wind gusts close to 70mph that day. The skiing was halfway decent, when you could see, and Kitty got blasted by a huge wind gust on her descent.

Thanks For Getting Me Amped!

I’m sitting here fighting a cold, resting, and staring out the window at a beautiful bluebird day. I’m also responding to some emails about Teton approaches, which lead me to revisit this video. Thanks for your emails…they are getting me amped for a park day tomorrow. 🙂

Tired!

After skinning about 30 miles, as well as climbing and skiing Mount Moran over the past two days, I will admit it…I’m tired. More photos to come. The Cathedral group at 6:41 pm last night.

Nez Perce Sustrugi

I’m off on a long slog and overnight mission today, so I’ll be back next week. Here’s a little edit from skiing the West Hourglass Couloir on Nez Perce the other day. We were behind another party headed into Garnet Canyon and when they told us there were headed to the Hourglass as well, we […]

Negative Tracks

The Tetons poke above the clouds yesterday morning. Click photos for larger image. Conditions have been pretty stellar here in the Tetons the past few days. With fresh snow every morning and the sun popping out, things have been great for ski touring. Over the past couple days however, I’ve had a mixed bag of […]

Bears On The Skintrack

If you’ve been out skiing lately, make that…if you’ve been out skiing away from everyone else lately, I’m sure you’ve seen a ton of wildlife. Here in Jackson Hole, it seems like everything is on the move right now and on my last tour I saw about 15 moose, 10 deer, an ermin, 3 bald […]

November in Garnet Canyon

Sooooo, I’ve gotten a few, “Have you skied in Garnet Canyon yet?”s recently, and the answer is…yes! I’ve been on a couple missions up into the north fork and over the weekend I skied on the Middle Teton Glacier. I wanted to go higher on the Middle, but I had left my avy gear in […]

Warning…Beware of Falcons

Just when you thought you had all your bases covered. Good, quality ski equipment…check. Reliable ski partner…check. Promising weather forecast…check. Low avalanche danger…check. Raptor danger…check?! This sign was found in the French Ridge Hut on the way to Mount Aspiring, NZ.

New Zealand Photo Purge, Part I

Well, after some fun time enjoying the southern hemisphere spring ski season in New Zealand, I arrived back in Jackson Saturday night, slept wicked hard for 10 hours, then jumped right into the northern hemisphere winter with some pretty darn good skiing on Teton Pass for Halloween. Soft powder snow never felt so good and […]

Skiing in Westlands NP, New Zealand, Part II

Ben Starkey rides in front of Bristol Top, near the Pioneer Hut, NZ. Click photo for trip report. Yeah BOY!!! Another trip report from down here skiing in New Zealand around the Pioneer Hut and Fox Glacier zone, is now up on the BD Journal site. Click HERE to check it out…and once again, thanks […]

Skiing in Westlands NP, New Zealand, Part I

Scott Fennell skins above the Centennial Hut. Just back from Aspiring.  Pretty good adventure, but no summit.  There is a trip report from the Centennial Hut with some great photos by Scott Fennell posted over on the Black Diamond Journal. Click HERE to check it out. Please feel free to leave comments on this post or […]

Time In…Up To Pioneer Hut

Pioneer Hut from Von Bulow. My finger is feeling a bit better and it looks like there is another high pressure system rolling in for a few days, so I’m catching a heli ride and heading back up into the mountains and the Pioneer Hut on Monday…New Zealand time. The Pioneer Hut sits in the […]

Two Weeks To New Zealand

Yeah baby! I’m pretty psyched to say that I’m headed to New Zealand to ski for the entire month of October. Before I go any further, I’d like to specifically thank Black Diamond and Arc’teryx Equipment for helping me make this happen. Without their support, I wouldn’t be able to experience a lot of things […]

Titcomb Basin 2010: The Trek In

Randosteve excited to be getting close to Fremont Peak. Click all photos for larger images. There had been lots of planning, work schedule changes, weather watching and rounding up of partners involved with putting this ski trip to the Wind River Range together. One would think that skiers would line up to ski the amazing […]
